Next breakout MLB star from New York?

In 2020, we saw RHP Ian Anderson for the Atlanta Braves pitch extremely well in his 1st season in the big leagues. He posted an impressive stat line this past season: 1.95 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 32.1 IP. He appeared in only 6 games, but has been a prized possession of Braves since they took him 3rd Overall in the 2016 MLB Draft out of Shenendehowa HS. The sky is the limit for Anderson and has development extremely well in the Braves Minor League System. Look for a big 2021 from him.

Now looking into the crystal ball about who will be the next breakout star in the MLB from New York?

  • RHP Josiah Gray – Los Angeles Dodgers (LeMoyne College)
    • Originally drafted in the 2018 MLB Draft 72nd overall by the Reds, Gray came over in the Matt Kemp deal. Gray’ fastballs gets up to 97 mph, slider lives in the low 80’s. Gray also throws a curveball and changeup, but both of those pitches aren’t where the slider is at currently. Very athletic. He is currently the top rated prospect in the Dodgers system. They have had a great of success developing arms in years past with Buehler and May to name a few.

  • RHP George Kirby – Seattle Mariners (Rye HS/Elon University)
    • Kirby was drafted in the 2019 MLB Draft 20th overall by the Marines out of Elon. He has really come along way since his days at Rye HS. He has grown into his 6’4″ frame and gets the FB up to as high as 98 MPH, but sits in the low to mid 90’s. Kirby throws a slider, curveball, and changeup. All of those pitches look to be above average as he develops. Also has been a strike thrower and you won’t see him issue many walks. Secondary stuff needs some time, but if it all clicks, don’t be surprised if you see his call up to the show, sooner rather then later.
    • George Kirby Scout Grades: FB 60 | CB 55 | SL 55 | CH 50 | CN 65 | Overall 55
  • LHP Joe Palumbo – Texas Rangers (St. John the Baptist)
    • Palumbo was drafted way back in 2013 (30th Round) out of St. John the Baptist HS in West Islip, NY. He was a player that just wanted to play pro-ball out of the gate. Very passionate player, bulldog on the mound. The lefty has battled some injuries during his time in the Rangers system but has pulled through. Palumbo gets the FB up to 96 and will sit consistently in the low 90’s. Curveball is his best secondary pitch and spins it very well. He has struggled in his brief stints with the Rangers at the big league level, but if he figures it out, could surprise some folks. Looks to project as bullpen arm for Texas.
